Fractional HR & payroll
Your HR and payroll department, without the full-time hire.
Making your first hires, or tired of running payroll yourself at 10pm? I set up HR and payroll the right way, then run it part-time, for a fraction of what a full-time hire would cost.
Remote support for small businesses across the U.S., with on-site visits available
Who I help
Two kinds of businesses call me.
Get set up right the first time.
- You're about to hire your first employees
- You're not sure which registrations, filings and forms you need
- You want to avoid misclassification and payroll tax penalties
New Employer Setup · 30 days
- Week 1Business details, worker roster, state accounts opened, payroll platform chosen
- Week 2Payroll built (schedules, earnings, deductions, PTO) and classification review
- Week 3Offer letters, onboarding packets and policies delivered; benefits path set with your broker
- Week 4Direct deposit test, a dry run, then your first live payroll
Hand it off without hiring anyone.
- The owner or office manager runs payroll after hours
- Timecards, garnishments and benefits paperwork keep piling up
- You're too small for an HR hire and too big to keep winging it
Takeover · nothing breaks, no check is late
- AuditI review how payroll, files and benefits run today and flag anything already broken
- DocumentYour process gets written down, and you keep it even if we stop working together
- ShadowI run one full payroll alongside your current person, with no risk to paychecks
- Take overFrom the next cycle, payroll, timecards, garnishments and reports are off your plate

Your employees get answers within one hour.

- Benefits and coverage questions
- Copies of paystubs and W-2s
- PTO balances
- Address and tax withholding changes
- New-hire paperwork help
Direct deposit changes are always confirmed by phone first, to protect your team from payroll fraud.
Growing? Watch these numbers
Your obligations change as your team grows. Most owners find out late.
Payroll taxes, I-9s, new-hire reporting, minimum wage and overtime rules.
Federal anti-discrimination laws (Title VII, ADA, GINA) apply.
Age discrimination law (ADEA) and federal COBRA continuation apply.
FMLA leave and the ACA employer mandate (50 full-time equivalents) apply.
These are federal thresholds. Many states and cities set lower ones, and they also set their own paid-leave, final-pay and pay-transparency rules. I track the ones that apply to you.

About
Experienced HR and payroll, on your team.
I've spent my career inside large organizations since 2012, and in HR and payroll since 2019, including at a staffing company with more than 10,000 employees. I've also been the only HR person for a company operating in more than 12 states. I've run biweekly payroll for hourly and salaried teams, garnishments and child support orders included, and handled the quarterly and annual payroll tax filings that come with it.
I've also owned open enrollment from start to finish, managed FMLA and ADA leave, built onboarding programs from scratch, written HR policies, and coached managers through hard conversations. I've worked in Workday, PrismHR, BambooHR and QuickBooks, so I can usually work inside the system you already have.
As the child of an Air Force veteran, I'm just as comfortable with blue-collar crews as I am in a boardroom. I've worked with field-crew businesses as well as office teams, so hourly crews, overtime, safety rules and job-site schedules are familiar territory.

Questions
Common questions
What does "fractional" HR mean?
You get an experienced HR and payroll professional for a set number of hours or a monthly retainer, instead of hiring a full-time HR manager. It fits businesses that need real expertise but not 40 hours a week of it.
Do I need to switch payroll software?
Usually not. I work inside the system you already use, and I've worked in Workday, PrismHR, BambooHR and QuickBooks. If your setup isn't a good fit for your business, I'll tell you why and help you move.
How big does my business need to be?
Most clients have between a handful and about 75 employees. If you've just made your first hire, that's a great time to start.
Do you file and pay my payroll taxes?
Whichever you prefer. I prepare your quarterly 941s, annual 940, state unemployment reports and year-end forms. You (or your CPA) can sign and submit them yourself. Or, with your written authorization, I file them and send the payments for you through the IRS and state online systems. Payments always come straight from your business bank account, never through mine, and you get a copy of every filing and payment confirmation.
Do you work on-site?
I work remotely, and I'm happy to travel to you when it helps, like for open enrollment meetings, trainings, a job-site visit or a busy launch. Travel costs are billed at cost.
Are you a PEO?
No. A PEO becomes the co-employer of your staff and usually charges per employee or a percentage of payroll. I work for you directly: your employees stay yours, and you pay only for the help you choose.
How do I pay you?
My preference is to be added to your payroll as a part-time employee. Clients who do this get 10% off my invoiced hourly rate, which offsets your share of payroll taxes on my wages. I'm paid through the same payroll I run, and you approve my pay each period, just like everyone else's. I don't need benefits.
As part of your team, I use a company email address, so your employees reach me the same way they'd reach a full-time HR person down the hall. If a monthly invoice works better for your business, that's fine too.
Are you a lawyer?
No. I give HR guidance, not legal advice. When something needs an employment attorney, I'll say so and work alongside yours.
How fast do you respond?
Your employees get an answer within one hour during business hours, for things like benefits questions or a copy of a paystub. New inquiries hear back within one business day. Payroll deadlines always come first.
